activities

Thulir caters to broadly two categories of students:
    
» School going students from Sitttilingi and nearby villages.

 
classroomFor the former group  classes are held on Wednesday, Thursady and Friday evenings after school [after 4 pm]; and in the mornings on Saturdays and Sundays [10 am to 2 pm].During Weekdays the emphasis is on academics, while during the weekends, Art and crafts and Workshop skills are emphasised.

For this group classes are held from 10 am till 4 pm. The classes are a mix of academic activitiy concentrating on basic langauage and math skills and also on skills that supplement workshop activities [recording work done, planning new work, costing etc.]

Language and Math SkillsLanguage and Math skills
At Thulir many children came initially with the very specific request that they be taught English. We sincerely started with teaching English and while explaining English stories/ passages we realised their command over Tamil usage [basic grammer/ vocabulary] is also shockingly poor. In life skills training, Thulir has exposed students to a variety of skills. The idea here is that by doing different tasks, a student may find the skill that interests her the most and the skill that she is good at.   more»







Studying the environmentStudying the Environment
At Thulir, the attempt is to use the environment around as a focal point to do exercises in learning various skills and subjects. For example, the children make a nature calendar where all the plants that flower at a given month/ season are observed and recorded.  more»
Arts and Crafts
We feel our village children do not get opportunities to handle art and craft materials and get a chance to express themselves. Therefore this is an important activity that we give a lot of emphasis to, as we believe this would help children to gain self-confidence and help unfold their creativity. Games/Sports Games/Sports
The Village lacks a good playground and we thought Thulir children should have access to one. We have a modest size open ground for games and children play football, koko, dodge ball and various Improvised local games.  more»

Interacting with

the outside world
Sittilingi being a remote valley, many of the tribal children grow up without going out of the valley for years. Consequently their knowledge of the outside world is limited to images from the TV and the movies that they watch. One of the reasons for their having difficulty in dealing with the non-tribal world and culture is the lack of knowledge and understanding of how things work in the outside world.  more»
