Sittilingi being a remote valley, many of the tribal children grow up
without going out of the valley for years. Consequently their knowledge of the
outside world is limited to images from the TV and the movies that they watch.
One of the reasons for their having difficulty in dealing with the non-tribal
world and culture is the lack of knowledge and understanding of how things work
in the outside world. Their lack awareness induces a low self-esteem and lack
of confidence in interacting with outsiders. One of Thulir's major activity is
to provide them with the knowledge and also create opportunities for them to
interact with visitors and resource persons from outside Sittilingi. All
visitors to Sittilingi visiting Tribal Health Initiative/ staff working here,
are encouraged to come to Thulir and have interactive sessions with the
children.
Newspaper reading / geography
We thought Newspaper reading could help develop a reading habit and at the
same time create awareness of events happening in the outside world. As
knowledge of the outside world is very poor among the children, these sessions
usually become geography lessons!!
Song/dance [other cultures]
The children get to learn new songs and dances from various visitors who
come to Thulir. This gives them a chance to appreciate other cultures and also
to interact easily with visitors speaking unfamiliar languages.
